Nigerian Government Launches e-Learning Websites For Schools

When the Covid-19 pandemic first hit the world, as a precautionarymeasure, educational institutions from all across the world were forced to shutdown. Nigeria is working hard to improve its educational infrastructure. Evenbefore the pandemic was hit, Nigeria was working on EdoBEST to improve thepublic education system and the pandemic forced the government to change theplan and implementation process for good. The financial and technical help byWord Bank further helped to work on this initiative rigorously and digitallearning improved. Not only are the students attending virtual classes tocontinue their learning, but they have also resorted to other creative ways oflearning too. FOr instance, many students prefer to play games like Scrabble Word Finder and Word Unscrambler to improve their vocabulary. Thisis the reason why educational games and edtech companies all across the worldare blooming during this tough time.

 

Teachers Started Working With DigitalLearning 

Before the students started adapting to digital learning, it was crucialfor the Nigerian teachers to make them familiar with digital learning to givetheir best. Many teachers across different Nigerian institutes successfullymanaged to learn management techniques and made them familiar with the modernway of teaching and it proved fruitful for the students. Further, the teachershad to be creative to use the digital platform to create the same level ofenthusiasm amongst the students for the learning.

Nigerian Government LaunchesE-Learning Websites

This month the Nigerian government launched an education website,inspire.education.gov.ng for improving the learning accessibility for thestudents. The website was inaugurated by Malam Adamu Adamu, Minister ofEducation of Nigeria. The website is powerful enough to handle the traffic oftwo million Nigerians at a time. The decision to create this website was takenbecause of the disruption that was caused by Covid-19 for two years. Thewebsite is created for both the students and the teachers and it will beaccessible for both. However, only registered teachers will have access to thiswebsite and the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria will be helping theMinistry of Education with the same. 

 

The website is currently designed to meet the needs, specifically ofprimary and secondary education and the website will further be accessible inthe rural areas and to the communities that do not have internet access.Currently, the website houses more than 4,000 basic level videos, 7,000secondary level video lessons and in addition to that, it further supports4,000 audio lessons for secondary levels. 

The content available on the website is designed in a manner that can bebroadcast in every media. For instance, content is being designed and madeavailable also in mediums like radio and television. The Nigerian government isalso working with Galaxy Backbone in order to expand broadband by laying fibresacross the country. The focus is currently on the primary and secondary levelschools because most universities have their own websites to support digitallearning. However, a new link for the same will be created soon. 

 

The website will support many local languages and agencies have beenharnessed for the same with the aim of harnessing local languages. Many localcontent providers are also working with the government to make the project asuccessful project. Currently, the formats which are supported by the websiteare video lessons, audio lessons and ebooks. The different subjects that aresupported in the website are agriculture science, basic science, basictechnology, civil education, cultural and creative arts, English language, homeeconomics, computer and IT, mathematics, physical and health education,security education, social studies, quantitative reasoning, verbal reasoningand creating writing. The subjects available for the secondary level are muchmore extensive than this, which is for the basic level. Currently, the websitehouses more than 15,000 resources and the courses available in it matches thecurriculum of the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council.
