Insights from previous global recessions (defined as contractions in annual global per capital (GDP) and global downturns (which are marked slowdowns in annual global GDP growth that do not entail outright contractions). We review the main features of previous global recessions and downturns for the light they shed on near-term prospects for the global economy.
