According to the World Health Organization, W.H.O, mental illness is associated with a significant burden of morbidity and disability. Lifetime prevalence rates of psychological disorders are higher than previously thought and constantly on the rise which has been said to affect 1 in 5 women.

Depression, anxiety, psychological distress, sexual violence, domestic violence, and escalating rates of substance use affect women to a greater extent than men across different countries and different settings.

Depressive disorders account for close to 41.9% of the disability from neuropsychiatric disorders among women compared to 29.3% among men. The disability associated with mental illness falls most heavily on those who experience three or more comorbid disorders.

Again, women predominate, hence the need to foster mental wellness.

In this episode of the Women Series, Ayomide Oguntoye chats with Vera Alex, a survivor, and a mental health coach, as she shares her story about sexual abuse and failure, her recovery process, and encouragement to women who have been dealing with one form of mental breakdown or the other.
