Remote working has created a shift in the ways organisations introduce fun and engaging activities to their employees while working from home. The number of hours workers have spent organising and attending virtual work meetings since the pandemic has significantly increased over the period. Some organisations are yet to fully explore and adjust to virtual activities due to the varied impacts of these activities or engagements on the opposite parties. This plays a significant role in how organisations can engage and impact their people positively and meaningfully through their virtual collaborative work tools.

While some organisations have initiated employees' perks like mental health programmes, team bonding, gifting food and care packages to their employees working from home. There is a need for newer and more interesting initiatives to engage and foster the work team. This will help to maintain the organisation's culture and, of course, increase team connectivity.

Organisations can create daily activities to keep their staff connected, like games such as trivia and online assessments with recognition awards or winning prizes. You can also have virtual Icebreakers, regular check-ins, develop a remote communication plan/policy that keeps everyone in check, have face-to-face meetings once a quarter, and keep communication lines open. Also, having virtual team building activities can help the company culture by giving workers a designated venue for getting to know each other. This can help reduce isolation, and it also means your company culture is driven by your employees and not characterised by working from home offices and working in pyjamas.

Fostering better connection

Getting together and knowing each other in the workplace is a goal of team building. It is the starting point where you and your employees get acquainted with each other outside of work life. This is more of a social gathering or activity than the usual email communications of daily work activities. Employees only get associated with their teams and departments while focusing on the roles they fulfil while on duty.

Note: employees would love going to work because they get to connect with people. Building bonds and relationships inside and outside the office space can help performance improvements among teams and departments.

Good Communication and Teamwork

The importance of team building is to encourage teamwork among employees by building connections and bonds between co-workers. This also allows for an easier time to communicate among departments and teams. This way, the culture in the office becomes more comfortable and pleasant. This also improves productivity and cohesion, especially with group work or projects.

Values and Engagement

Team building activities aim to improve the confidence of employees through the activities. Not only do they cultivate teamwork, but they also have fun doing so.

Additionally, team building is important as it helps both leaders and employees see each other genuinely. Leadership learns more about taking care of their employees while building an environment that makes people want to work. As for employees, they get to be a part of and see the bigger picture that makes them take ownership of the vision and mission of the organisation.

Innovation and Creativity

Instead of choking (Micromanaging) your employees or forcing them to live, breathe, and eat their work daily, why not foster a sense of innovation and creativity through team building activities. Team building creates an environment where creativity thrives among happy and willing employees as well as the leaders. With such an open environment, you will discover talents from people you least expect.

Team building helps the team feel refreshed as they step out from the rigours of the office workday. This gives breathing room and helps them gain a fresh perspective which motivates them to be more productive.

Trust and Team Bonds

Trust is an important factor in every good business; this holds as the cornerstone that keeps everything in place. Trust helps employees see the management team in a new light, giving them a personality behind their titles. It becomes easier for communication to be passed down to them.

Trust is needed among teams and co-workers as this helps them know they can count on each other to get their jobs done.

Team building activities help in building trust and team bonding. Leadership gets to know and understand employees personally, seeing them as people. The same is true between co-workers, seeing them as people rather than being names on an email.

The importance of maintaining good mental health and the team's well-being to make up your organisation cannot be overemphasised. Investing in your people at the workplace is very important as they are worth more than their job roles and job descriptions. Getting to know them helps you discover their potentials and how you can build them up through team building. These team-building activities may help boost your employees' engagement at your workplace because these activities help with the development of skills, like communication and collaboration, which work against common workplace frustrations, such as dealing with co-workers and managing company politics.
