Broadcast Media Africa has learnt that leading tech company, Microsoft, is spending upwards of $100 million on the African Development Centre to further the innovation of tech solutions that will alleviate problems in its customers across Africa.

Situated in Lagos, the African Development Centre will be home to Microsoft employees working on product engineering, ecosystem development, creation and the Microsoft Garage.

"We hope to employ extraordinary engineering talent throughout Africa that will construct innovative solutions for global impact. This will also assist engineers in creating relevant projects within their own countries and join in the global engineering and development organisation", said Microsoft in a statement seen by BMA.

Minister of Communications and Digital Economy in Nigeria, Isa Pantami, opened the site in the presence of other dignitaries, counting the Director-General of Nigeria's National Information Technology Development Agency, Kashifu Inuwa. Mr Pantami mentioned that the decision taken by Google to place its development centres in Nigeria bears witness to Nigeria becoming Africa's digital hub. The Microsoft facility will assist the growth of its digital economy.

A representative of the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, acknowledged Microsoft for its "pledge to developing the tech in Nigeria through this sophisticated 7-floor facility, which will reduce unemployment and contribute significantly to the training and rise of many tech innovators in Nigeria".

The Lagos facility is the first in Africa, and it is expected to promote technological advancement on the continent and contribute to the development and innovation of tech in Africa.
