Sanwoolu, Abiodun List Benefits Of Proposed Lagos-Ogun Joint Commission

GovernorsBabajide Sanwoolu and  Prince Dapo Abiodun, MFR, drew up a list ofbenefits of a joint economic Commission between Lagos and Ogun states whileaddressing the Organised Private Sector (OPS) at the October edition of theNigeria-South Africa Chamber of Commerce, NSACC. 

At a paneldiscussion moderated by Mr Foluso Phillips Chairman of Phillips ConsultingGroup, a leading African professional services firm, both Governors agreed thatLagos and Ogun were critical to national economic growth, and an effectivepartnership between them would help drive sustainable regional and nationaldevelopment.

Lagos is thecommercial centre of the country and the fifth largest economy in Africa, whileOgun is currently emerging as the nations industrial hub.

GovernorBabajide Sanwoolu set the context for discussions by stating that the FederalGovernment in 2005 tried to initiate a Lagos-Ogun Commission, but failed.

Sanwoolu wasoptimistic that with Lagos and Ogun states now under the same political party,the commission had great prospects of becoming a reality.

The Lagosstate Governor  said the activities of the  Commission would bedriven by the Deputy Governors and would look into critical areas like;

  • Border issues
  • Transportation
  • WasteManagement
  • Education
  • Security
  • Cross-BorderIdentity Management


The Governors commended the Federal Government for the recent "Border Closure" decision which has helped to rejuvenate the agricultural sector in terms ofdomestic production.

Governor DapoAbiodun also noted the fact that the Commission would help  ramp upactivities in the infrastructure space, as major roads that linked the twostates to other parts of the country and neighbouring countries, were indeplorable conditions.

The Governorsinformed the business community that efforts have been made through discussionswith the Federal Government, to explore partnerships to address and speed upwork on roads like the Lagos-Abeokuta road and the Ikorodu -Shagamu road.

Both Governorsbelieved that States should be allowed to rehabilitate designated federalhighways that affect the livelihood of citizens and increase the cost of doingbusiness.

Looking at theprospects of improving the transportation network between the states, GovernorSanwoolu identified the Epe to Ijebu Ode and  Ebute Metta to Agbado railcorridors as areas to explore and improve access with a view to ease commuting.

In the areaof  public finance the Governor  of Ogun State, Dapo Abiodun, usedthe occasion to commend his Lagos state counterpart, for prompt remittance oftaxes due to Ogun state.

On Educationboth states singled out Edo State as a template for peer review to improvelearning and participation of pupils and students, by deploying technology.

 Abiodunalso announced that a major Inland Terminal will be developed to help ease thegridlock at the busiest Seaport in Nigeria, the Apapa Port in Lagos State.

 Sanwoolu and Abiodunboth solicited the support of the private sector in actualizing their economicstrategies.

Chairman ofthe occasion, and serial industrialist, Dr Oba Otudeko, Chairman HoneywellFlour Mills, called for a pragmatic political approach from both stateGovernors in the discharge of their duties.

He encouragedthem to focus on completing projects that they inherited from theirpredecessors, which include infrastructure projects that will have far-reachingsocio-economic benefits for the citizens of their respective states.

The signing ofthe agreement on the joint Commission between both states is expected in a fewdays, with the private sector expecting that there will be  legislation toback up the Commission and institutionalizing the partnership.
