JusticeReform Project (JRP) in collaboration with Edo State Judiciary hosted its 2ndMock Remote Hearing on March 29, 2021. The remote session featured aninterlocutory hearing as well as a trial heard by the Honourable Chief Judge ofEdo State, Hon. Justice E.A Edigin who presided over the session while U.TUdochi Esq and Osaro Eghobamein, SAN were the leadcounsel from the Claimant and Defendant's side, respectively.
The case with SUIT NO: B/RH/1 /2021 between Raspotech Nigeria Limited (Claimant) and Hesper Nigeria Limited (Defendant) was to recover outstanding sums due to the Claimant under a contract for supply of specific equipment. The case featured contemporary legal issues such as the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on commercial transactions and the exercise of corporate powers by employees of companies.
Speakingon the essence of the Justice Reform Project, Nonso Anyasi, the Registrar ofthe court explained that the idea behind the project is to demonstrate toparticipants in the judicial sector that virtual hearing can be done inNigeria. According to him, this meant that technology could be deployed toimprove the judicial process in the country and serve as a critical reform forthe vital arm of government. It is instructive considering the need to improvethe court activities amidst the challenges posed by the COVID 19 pandemic.
The Chief Judge, High Court of Edo State, Hon.Justice Edigin in her closing remarks, adjourned the court for the next 13days, ahead of the final reading.
About the Justice Reform Project
The Justice Reform Project is an initiative thatwas unveiled in 2019 by a group of over 20 Senior Advocates of Nigeria with aneffort to achieve a broad consensus on and implement a process for the reformof the sector, highlighting some critical aspects of Nigeria's justice deliverysystem for review and reform.
These include the composition, constitution,functions and internal controls of the National Judicial Council; the processfor the appointment, continuing education and promotion of judicial officers;the process for the discipline and regulation of judicial officers; terms andconditions of service of judicial officers; Judicial ethics, values and therelationship of the Bench with the Bar; as well as the process for theappointment of lawyers to the Body of Benchers.
The group's membership now includes professionalsacross various sectors, all of whom are committed to an effective and efficientjudiciary.
