Early this year, Google announced the development of its first product centre in Nairobi, Kenya.
Google indicated that the new facility will assist create transformative products and services for African people and the rest of the world and plans to hire visionary engineers, product managers, UX designers and researchers to establish the groundwork for extraordinary growth in the future.
The centre is looking to hire creative people who will assist in solving complex and critical technical challenges, like improving the smartphone experience for people in Africa or creating reliable internet infrastructure.
Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Google, announced last year its plan to invest US$1-billion in the next five years to aid digital transformation in Africa.
According to a Google report, this investment looks to enable fast, reliable, affordable internet access for Africans, create useful products, support entrepreneurs and small businesses, and assist non-profit organisations in better-servicing lives in Africa.
Google opened an AI research centre in Accra, Ghana, in 2018 to drive useful innovations.
Suzanne Frey, the VP for Products, said, "Google's objective is to make the Internet useful for Africans and collaborate with governments in Africa, regulators, educators, entrepreneurs and businesses to shape the next wave of innovation in the African continent.
I am delighted to invite all Africans who are passionate about improving the digital experience of Africans by creating products to apply for open positions at the first product development centre in Africa."
The Managing Director for Google in Africa, Nitin Gajria, added, "there are more than 300 million users of the internet in Africa who are young and mobile-first. We estimate that by 2030, African users would have increased to 800 million, which is a third of the world's under-35 population."
