On Friday July27th, 2018 Carl Onora Ikeme the Wolverhampton Wanderers and theSuper Eagles of Nigeria goalkeeper, announced his retirement from footballafter a successful recovery from Acute leukemia treatment and theraphy.

The decisionwhich was a difficult one for the 32-year old Nigerian came after the doctorsadviced him to take the bold step that bring an end to an eventful footballcareer.

It is always achallenging period in a footballer’s career to retire prematurely to healthconcerns, but in this article we outline how the world rallied round Ikemewhich reinforced the value of humanity in the passionate round leather game.

Carl Ikeme had10 national team caps for Nigeria and played 200 games for WolverhamptonWanderers F.C club in England.

It was verytouching to see a short video clip that featured top class veteran and currentgoalkeepers across the globe, pay tribute to Carl Ikeme with the “One CarlIkeme” phrase.

From PetrSchmeichel(Retired Danish Goalkeeper), David Seaman (Retired English Keeper) toLukas Fabianski(Polish Keeper),  Iker Casillas (Spanish Keeper), Joe Hart(English Keeper,), Mac Andre Ter Stegen (German Keeper) and  Petr Cech(Czech Keeper), it was a show of solidarity to their fellow goalkeeper.

From FellowSuper Eagles Players like Ahmed Musa, Ogenyi Onazi, John Ogu, Daniel Akpeyi andKenneth Omeruo, it was all praises and commendations for Carl Ikeme as agoalkeeper, teammate and friend.

They sent theirbest wishes to him, praying for his progress in future endeavours.

NFF Offer

In recognitionof his contributions to the national football team, the Nigerian FootballFederation has offered Carl Ikeme a role in its technical crew, which if heagrees to will come after series of coaching courses.

This is awelcome development to how Nigeria treats its sports athletes who have to endtheir careers abruptly to injuries or special ailments.

Carl Ikemethroughout his treatment received massive encouragement and support from theNFF.
