As the countdown to the 2023 general elections begins, the role of market women is essential as they play a significant role across the nation through mobilization. In the southwest region, the market woman leader, also known as 'Iya Oloja,' is the arrowhead of socio-political activism.

Yeye Modupe Ojo, Iya Oloja of Orisun Bare market (Mile 12), Lagos State, in a recent conversation, provided her perspective on grassroots women mobilization with the commencement of campaignsShe stated that contrary to general beliefs; traders are not politicians; instead, they work with the people in power through negotiations and strategic planning.

Iya Olojas is also concerned about the policies and actions the government implements that affect the market women. She noted that market women contribute to the high percentage of voters during the election. Before any decision to support a political aspirant for the 2023 elections, they must be sure of what the aspirants are willing to offer.

She went on to suggest that the government should act as a liaison between market women and manufacturers, ensuring that products are designed to meet the final consumer's needs and are sold at reasonable prices that generate profit for the market women.

Likewise, she mentioned that infrastructure provided by the government, like roads, shops and electricity, should be accessible and affordable for market women.

Yeye Modupe Ojo also pleaded with the current government to resolve insecurity issues across the nation, as this is a significant impediment affecting farmers and keeping them away from their farms. This has affected production, production cost, and selling prices in the market.
