15th Annual Banking and Finance Conference to Discuss Sustainable Financing, Food Security, and the AfCFTA

Sustainable Financing, AfCFTA, Food Security, Climate Change, Workforce Globalization and the Nigerian Economy are discussed at the 15th Annual Banking and Finance Conference scheduled for September 13 to 14th, 2022.

 

The Chairman of the Central Planning Committee for the Conference and MD/CEO of Sterling Bank, Mr. Abubakar Suleiman, disclosed this at the pre-summit press briefing at the CIBN Head office in Victoria Island, Lagos. 

 

He said President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, would be the special guest of honour at the event. At the same time, Vice-President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, GCON, is also expected to grace the occasion. 

 

According to him, the Chief Host of the event is the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Godwin Emefiele, CON. 

 

Speaking on the choice of the theme “Repositioning the Financial Services Industry for an Evolving GLOCAL Context,” he said it was an opportunity for the banking industry in Nigeria to explore strategies that would boost competitiveness. 

 

“The conference, expected to host over 10,000 participants at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja, will provide a platform to drive conversations that will reposition the financial services industry.”

 

He added that the keynote speaker for the conference was a seasoned business leader Mr. Farouk Gumel, the Chairman of Union Bank Plc. It would also feature a session for millennials. 

 

The President and Chairman of the Council of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN), Dr. Ken Opara, in his brief address, said, “The 15th hybrid Annual Banking and Finance Conference is a flagship programme of the CIBN, hosted as a platform for stakeholders in the industry, and other critical players that include policymakers, regulators, operators, academics and clients. It is an opportunity to exchange ideas on contemporary issues affecting the sector and economy.”

 

He said millennials would be considered a top priority at the conference as they constitute critical national demography.

 

Dr. Ken Opara restated the commitment of CIBN to driving capacity building for the Nigerian banking industry. 

 

Speaking on the impact of previous conferences, Dr. Seye Awojobi, Registrar/CEO of CIBN, said it had played a vital role in current bankers committee intervention in the rehabilitation and transformation of the National Arts Theatre. He also pointed out that Banks have increased their support for MSME financing, because of the advocacy led by CIBN.
